Every feast begins with a seed…

Have you ever thought of the depth of meaning this statement implies? Last week got me thinking, as I read and pondered my daily reflection of Scripture. And still, I continue to reflect on this because it is so profound and with great meaning, and joy. The message was from Saint Luke, when Jesus posed the question to his disciples, “What is the Kingdom of God like?” He went on to explain that it is like a mustard seed, planted in the garden, and becoming a magnificent bush where the birds of the sky dwelt in its branches. He also drew the comparison of yeast mixed with three measures of wheat flour until the whole batch of dough was leavened. (Luke 13:18-21)
Everything significant and of great meaning started out as something small, but certainly no less significant. Take YOU, for example. You began as a seed. And at the moment of your conception, a great miracle in and of itself, YOU actually radiated light. Photons, released by elemental reactions as you formed from your mother’s egg and your father’s sperm, ignited the beautiful process of replication where 1 cell became 2, 2 cells became 4, 4 cells became 8 and so on…and this process of renewal and replication hasn’t stopped since!
I don’t think that we will ever truly understand and appreciate the magnitude of this event. From the tiny seed you began as, for the next 5 days you traveled quite a distance and found your nesting home for the next 9 months. You had cells that already had different jobs to do, forming an inner and outer layer. You had cells that would support you as cushioning and nourishing amniotic fluid for the next 9 months. In less than 20 days your internal organs began to form, including your brain and spinal cord and your heart and your veins and your arteries. Whew! In fact by 3 months old in your mother’s womb the majority of your organs were completely formed. And yet your brain and spinal cord continued to develop. Their development literally knit you together to who you are today.
You personality, your wit, your gifts, your strengths and who you are, are in some big way a result of your development. Think about this for a moment. Who in your life have you impacted and made a difference? What have you contributed to the world in your entire lifetime that quite honestly is too large to measure? Where have you made your mark, and why have you made it?
You are unique. You are you. And only you can be you. You know the secrets of your own heart, endowed by your Creator to carry out your unique purpose in this world. Every feast begins with a seed. The magnitude of your impact and your life is not unlike that feast. And then remember you aren’t the only seed. Think of the relationships you’ve formed, the family you’ve created, the overarching dwelling in the branches of the mustard tree. And then multiply that number with everyone in existence today, in the past, and in the future. Now that’s deep. Every day we make the choice to nourish and develop the seed we have been given into a great feast. Someday we will fully comprehend the magnificence of the story.
Of course, when I reflect on this in light of what I do as a family chiropractor, one very poignant quote comes to mind,
“You never know how far reaching something you think, say or do today, will affect the lives of millions tomorrow.” -BJ Palmer.
To be impacted in a positive way through a balanced nerve system and an understanding of our body’s ability to heal with gusto is beautiful beyond measure.
Every feast begins with a seed.
